Chapter Six

Jodi had grieved for hours, and then Leanne and Rhonda had a talk with her. “Look, Jodi. We know you’re grieving. This really, really sucks,” Rhonda began.

“But you can’t go on like this,” Leanne broke in. “You need to do something.”

“What?” Jodi whispered. “I don’t know what to do.”

Rhonda and Leanne exchanged a glance. “You shouldn’t stay here.” Jodi looked up in surprise. “At least, not right now. You need a change of scenery, one that doesn’t include Emily.” Rhonda shook her head.

Leanne tried. “You should go stay with your parents. Or, is there another friend you could stay with for a while?”

Jodi raised a tear-stained face. “You guys want me to leave?”

Leanne immediately hugged her, then sat, rubbing her back. “Of course not. But right now, we’re not helping you heal because we’re part of the problem: we’ve spent a little time with Emily. Emily has spent a lot of time with you here, in our home. You need a change of pace, and fresh faces. Somewhere where not everyone already knows your story.”

Rhonda leaned in for a hug, too. “We love you, Jodi. And we’ll miss you terribly. But you need to take care of this. Take care of you. Then come back to us. Okay?”

Jodi sniffled, then stuttered out an okay. After they left her alone for a few minutes, she picked up the phone and called Gerri.
